Gladstone Guardian 1:52PM
In a sad turn of news for this paper, Gladstone Guardian’s long-time editor has confirmed from a reliable anonymous source outside the government that Discordia’s president, Japhet Halakai, is terminally ill.
This reliable source indicates that the president may not make it to the 2007 elections. He has made several confirmed trips over the past year to Switzerland for treatment and it is strongly believed that despite his public beliefs, the President is sick with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, the disease known as AIDS.
This tragic news brings question of a political power struggle within the governments ruling factions to the fore.
If the President’s illness persists, there is the possibility of a dangerous leadership vacuum emerging, resulting in a power struggle between the Gangor Delta Axis, the political faction of the President and Minister of Defense Halakazi, and the North-West Alliance, Vice-President Nasiru’s political faction.
This possibility has profound implications for the uneasy alliance between these two political groups and for Discordia, whose unity already hangs in the balance.
