WPDB: EDITORIAL BLOG - GROUPS ENDORSE PRINCIPLES FOR ETHICAL OIL EXTRACTION IN DISCORDIA; NOSFERATU SILENT

The Washington Patriot has been closely following the discovery of oil and subsequent extraction debates surrounding Discordia. Many local, national and international community action groups have expressed their concerns regarding future oil extraction in the nation. While it is possible for oil extraction to benefit several groups within Discordia - and provide a source of energy for other nations - the government must not accept arrangements with companies that will result in violations of human rights and environmental safety. In order to safeguard against these violations, companies who seek to extract or develop oil and oil-related technologies in Discordia should endorse the following principles:

- We condemn violence perpetrated against particular ethnic groups in Discordia.
- Companies working in Discordia should not engage in any activities that will endanger the stability of the unity government and the safety of its Indigenous peoples. Such activities include NOT selectively arming one or several ethnic, religious or cultural group(s).
- Companies engaged in oil extraction, EP and transport policies in Discordia have a moral obligation to give prime importance to environmental and human health concerns.
- Companies engaged in oil extraction, EP, and transport policies in Discordia must involve local communities and non-profit organizations in decisions that will affect local communities.

These principles have been openly endorsed by the Central Discordia Unity League (CDUL) and Verdant Future, and have garnered the anonymous support of groups unable to express open support at this time. We are also pleased to note that Cromwell Inc. agrees that these principles fall in line with their company statement and that they anticipate no problems in endorsing them. However, Nosferatu, a rival company with interests in the area, has refused to endorse these straightforward protections for human rights and environmental safety. The government of Discordia should lead the way by using these requirements as a benchmark for development of oil extraction technologies within its borders. They represent, at a bare minimum, those standards necessary for the protection of human life and environmental integrity. Meanwhile, Nosferatu must note that the international community watches on eagerly in an effort to better understand its commitment to environmental safety and human dignity.
