Nurture and Shared Heritage International
Cocoa Weevil Eradication proposal
Eradication of the CW is essential for the economy of the Discordia. Elimination of the
CW would not only significantly improve the current agricultural production, but it would
also provide an incentive for the populations currently engaged in slash-and-burn
agriculture to switch to a more sustainable way of life. This in turn would be
environmentally beneficial for the Emtwala Mountains and Ignosi Highliands and could
allow for at least a portion of the area to be declared as National Park or be used for
tourism development. In other words, the benefits of the project are financially and
environmentally manifold.
The project has a high chance of being successful as Ghana has dealt with the similar
problem and has developed effective ways of combating CW. Therefore the needed lessons
learned are available.
For this reason Nurture and Shared Heritage International have put together a proposal
for the eradication of CW. The project should be kicked off by a pilot project that would
require $100,000. The continuation of the project would last over 3-4 years, would cover
all of Discordia and would amount to $10-20million.
Nurture and Shared Heritage International are happy to announce that they have reached an
agreement with company DiscoCrom to fund the pilot portion of the project."
